I did it – my first slip and slide in this muddy tropical rain forest! I knew it was going to happen EVENTUALLY… and there was not a more probable time for that fall than this week with all the rain we’ve been getting.
We were on our way to the waterfall, and as soon as we set foot on the little pathway my steps turned from sturdy to pitifully wobbly. It is menacing to walk about in such an unsteady manner, and it made me think of a passage from a sermon that Jonathan Edwards preached on
“Truly you set them in slippery places;
you make them fall to ruin.
How they are destroyed in a moment,
swept away utterly by terrors!”
How scary is every step of the unbeliever, how risky and unsure every step. They are always exposed to the probability of sudden and unexpected destruction. Every step is possibly the step of death – and “when the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too.” (Proverbs 11:7)
The truth is that theses tropical mountains with their muddy ground, earthquakes and frequent land slides is not nearly as frightening as the ground people choose for their souls to stand on. As Matthew 7 says, the one who does not have Christ as Lord “is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it…” GREAT was the fall of it – there will be nothing to cushion this fall.
But what a sure and unshakable foundation Christ is for the soul who submits to Him as Lord and Savior!
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. ”
Lord willing, the day will come for them to hear these words of Christ – and may they then cling to Christ as Lord and Savior. When that day comes their physical ground would still be as menacing as before, but they would now have the surest, sweetest and most infallible foundation for their souls!
